The UN Report "Live Stock's long Shadow" from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization states:
The livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions than
all of the ships, cars, lorries, planes and other transport in the World combined.
It is also a major source of land and water degradation.
It is responsible for 37% of all human-induced methane that has 23 times the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of CO2,
65% of human-related nitrous oxide, from meat processing, which has about 300 times the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of CO2
and 64% of ammonia, which contributes significantly to acid rain. |

A complete Stop to Consumption, Production and Sale, of animal products can stop 80% of global warming
and the effects can be experienced almost immediately.
The solution to ALL the World's problems can begin by what we put on our plate. |
| |
People's personal choice of a Compassionate diet has more far reaching effects than just the climate,
as their actions to better treat animals will also affect how they treat other humans
and the possibilities are endless. The positive chain reaction in all areas of our lives
that will result cannot be underestimated
On the other hand, relying only on external regulatory bodies to discuss and decide what to do to reduce Global Warming,
might bring results very gradually if at all, taking decades to see the effect at best. However, Governments directly promoting vegetarian or vegan diets would be ideal. |

Grain produced used to feed animals, currently up to 70% in some countries, could be used to feed people directly.
Last year the planet produced enough grain to feed 10 billion people.
90% of the protein is being wasted by cycling it through the animals
It takes up to 16 times the weight of grain to produce the same weight in edible flesh.
Also up to 200 times the same amount of water to produce that flesh compared to that needed for the same weight in grain.

70% of the Amazon deforestation is due to land cleared for cattle grazing,
while the remaining deforestation is largely due to growing grain to feed cattle in Europe.
The Amazon rainforest is our ally in absorbing CO2 in the atmosphere.

A changed individual's personal choice is the fastest way to bring about change,
other ways will take more time than we have for that change. |

The Arctic could be ice-free in 2013 and the North Pole itself possibly by as soon as Summer 2008, which could lead to big changes in global temperatures.
However to be able to stop that from occuring we have to act instantly
and have up to 2 years to bring about drastic reduction in Greenhouse gas emissions.
The rate of Ice melting and sea warming is exponential as more exposed sea and soil will drastically increase
the rate of heat absorption from the sun, as less ice is available to reflect it back into space.

| |

Several Gigatonnes of Methane and CO2 could be released from the exposed Permafrost and warming seas, further warming the atmosphere
Methane is a poisonous gas and 20-30 times more powerful a Greenhouse gas than CO2
 |
| |

Complete melting of ice from Greenland alone will lead to a 22 foot rise in sea levels
A 1m sea level rise will result in 56 million people becoming environmental refugees,
mainly in developing nations, who have not contributed significantly to global warming.
Global warming is already accountable for many refugees in Africa, due to extreme weather patterns,
leading to social conflict.
Unusual weather is already being experienced all around the world in the form of Floods, Drought, etc,
leading to crop failure, food crisis, water shortage.

The time to act is now, and the media plays an important role to let the people know what they can do to help most.
A simple sign saying, "Go Veg, Be Green and Save the Planet" visible to all on front pages,
gives viewers a choice of finding out more and deciding on helping bring about the drastic change needed.
While there are many 'solutions' and possible 'actions' all debated on and with prolonged implementation,
the above mentioned is one that is needs no further action on behalf of the media,
as the rest is up to the individual to carry out by choice, being the most simple and powerful 'action'
the media can help to do to bring about a solution.
|
| |
Being in a position of Leadership in the Media world creates the responsibility of encouraging what is known to be good.
The Media owes the readers and viewers the success of their sites,
and is responsible for letting them know that they too can take personal action to help in a dire climate situation. The same can be said of governments, who should also be encouraged to spread the veg message.
|
